TMZ Reports:
Floyd Mayweather allegedly orchestrated a savage attack on two of his employees he suspected of stealing his jewelry … TMZ has learned.
Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ Sports … the two men had been hired to work on Floyd’s Vegas homes … but when jewelry went missing, Floyd pointed the finger at them.
We’re told the men claim they were contacted several weeks ago and instructed to meet Floyd at an off-site location.
When the men arrived, they claim Floyd was waiting for them — along with a number of his “people” –  who proceeded to beat the living crap out of them with various weapons, including clubs.
Our sources say the attack was so brutal the men could have easily died.  Both men had broken arms and legs and were hospitalized for several days.
One source put it this way, “It was some ‘Breaking Bad’ s**t.”
We’re told the men are adamant they never took anything from Floyd and it appears Floyd realizes that now.  But here’s the problem for the champ — sources familiar with the situation say the attack amounts to attempted murder, mayhem and kidnapping.  We’re told the men have retained a lawyer.
Huzlers was informed that early March 13th Floyd Mayweather was arrested from his home and is being charged for attempted murder and kidnapping.

WHY APC ISN’T POPULAR IN SOUTH-SOUTH - AKPABIO

Akpabio: WHY APC ISN’T POPULAR IN SOUTH-SOUTH - AKPABIO
In this interview with select journalists in Akwa Ibom State, the state governor, Godswill Akpabio speaks on the centenary celebration, his experiences as the chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum (PDPGF), among other issues.

Despite the role Akwa Ibom played in the Amalgamation of the Northern and Southern protectorates in 1914, the state appears not to be listed as part of the places the celebration will be observed. How do you feel about this?
I have seen that we have Amalgamation House in Ikot Abasi, which was built by Lord Lugard and his residential building is there too. It is clearly written there - the Amalgamation House built in 1914. Well, I wasn’t there in 1914 so I wouldn’t know if the amalgamation agreement was actually signed there. I think historians have to do a lot of work. I don’t know whether it was signed in Lokoja or in Ikot Abasi. I will invite the Office of the Secretary to Government of the Federation to visit the Amalgamation House and try to include it so that we can have a complete history.

We should celebrate Nigeria for being together for 100 years and not necessarily where the structures of amalgamation are located. I don’t want us to reduce the issue to where it was signed. If you look at it very well, there are people who even argued that Lugard made a mistake by calling us Nigeria. People ask questions such as: why must he bring us together? Why didn’t he allow us to be two countries? The important thing is that we should celebrate the fact that 100 years after, we are still together.

After sticking together for a century as a country, how would you assess the journey so far?
It has been a chequered history. We should learn from Egypt and the Nile River. People from all over the world came together and lived there because the land was fertile and the first civilisation in the world was born from there.  So, Nigerians - in spite of our large size and differences, since we are together - have come together. We can make it work.  My impression of Nigeria is that of a chequered history, in the sense that if we had had democracy all along without military intervention in the country, we would have been better. We have achieved a lot in the last 14 years than we did in 35 years of military rule. That is my opinion and now we have opportunity to build. We should look forward to the next 50 to 100 years and think about what will happen to the country. We should start that today. If we look backwards, we will have regrets. We must go back to the basis; we must love one another, and every Nigerian must feel free in any part of this nation. We must de-emphasise tribe and religion, emphasise our Nigerian-ness and give everybody equal opportunity from 2014 onward.

Just one year ago, you were elected chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF). How relevant has this body been one year on?
You cannot talk about achievements as such because the forum has no budget and therefore cannot embark on capital projects. But the intention of the forum is to reposition our party, to ensure peer review mechanism so that the PDP governors can learn from one another, compare notes and ensure full implementation of the manifesto of the PDP. Of course, we should guarantee food on the tables of Nigerians, dividends of democracy, infrastructure to all and sundry; give better education, better health-care and general enhancement of the lives of Nigerians.

I want to say that one year after, the forum has lived up to its responsibilities. We have been able to create a synergy between the members of our great party and National Assembly and then the governors of the PDP. We have been able to get a better understanding, a working relationship with Mr President who is the leader of the PDP. We have managed to work and understand each other now better. We held a meeting with National Assembly members of our party, something that has never happened before. You have seen that we have worked together to ensure a mini-convention that repositioned our party and brought in new hands to ensure the vibrancy of the PDP and reposition the party to win in 2015 general elections.

Despite the crack in the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF), the PDP Governors’ Forum has remained steadfast together and stable and is a major stabilising factor, even for Nigerian governors in general. We are very happy that that Forum has come to be. I have enjoyed robust cooperation from my colleagues, the governors of the PDP, and I thank them so much for reposing confidence in me and for always standing by me. A leader without followership cannot claim to be a leader. I am so happy that my colleagues are supporting me. Mr President has stood behind me and PDP NWC party has been wonderful.

With the loss of some key PDP members, including governors and national Assembly members, there are fears in the party that it may not win in 2015.
There is no fear about how are we going to perform in 2015. So far, we have sent jitters and shivers to even the opposition party. They try to change names but that couldn’t work. The next thing they could do was to attempt a merger to see if they could rival the PDP. It is not in the change of name, it is in the content. PDP is the only national party in Nigeria. It does not belong to anybody; it belongs to all Nigerians. Nobody can lay claim to the PDP. We are very happy with the party and Nigerians because this is the only party that has confidence in giving all Nigerians a sense of belonging. That is why they could come to the South-South of Nigeria, a minority part, to pick a president in the person of President Goodluck Jonathan. This shows that the PDP is detribalised in nature. The idea of division only comes from political leaders who want to corner the wealth of the country. There is no division in the minds of Nigerians. Every Nigerian craves for infrastructure and good governance and the PDP is providing that.

In spite of the challenges, you can see that he is still focused on ensuring that the power sector works. Now we are seeing the privatisation of the power sector, we have seen a revolution in the agricultural sector, a lot of roads have been constructed and the railways have been revitalised. The president understands what is going on and that is why Nigerians are behind him and the PDP. Governors elected on the PDP platform are winning awards on a daily basis: man of the year, best governor of the year and all that. We need to support the President; we need to focus on transforming this country, not on ethnic and divisive things that the opposition is dwelling on. Propaganda can only sustain the opposition for a few months. When the nitty-gritty of the nation comes, you will know that PDP governors are behind their president and the PDP will deliver in all elections in 2015.

What have been your greatest challenge and regrets since you started as governor?
I don’t have regrets. You can talk about challenges. The challenge is the idea of people thinking that the only way they can aspire is through the opposition. The loss of some of my colleagues, who decided to defect to opposition could be something that posed a lot of challenges because no party would like to lose a state governor. But then, what has happened is democracy in action. The reality is that the deputies of most of them did not go with them and over 90 per cent of their supporters said ‘No, we are not going there.’

Look at the rally the party is doing everywhere. Supporters have come out in large numbers to say we are not going anywhere because this is the only national political party.  Every person in this country craves for a sense of belonging and it is only the PDP that can give Nigerians that sense of belonging. So, the joy of it is ‘Yes, the followers are still intact.’ The main challenge for the Forum has been the issue of defection of those few governors. You know doors are still open and we are hoping in the next few months, some of them will see the need to come back and join their kith and kin because it is not easy to go and line up in another political party when you had attained the level of a governor.

The PDP is winning not because we have a magic wand; the party is winning because of its programmes. If you come to my state, you will see what PDP administration in has done and I have seen it in many other states of the federation too not just in Akwa Ibom. Compare what the PDP governors are doing in their various states with what the opposition governors are doing, and you will be amazed that the PDP will win a landslide in 2015.

The PDP Governors’ Forum is rotating its meeting. The last time we were at Katsina State and next month we should be going to Niger State and after Niger, we will go to another PDP State. We want to go round so that we compare notes and look at what the PDP governors are doing and look at areas of improvement.

GUILTY .. Vybz Kartel Convicted Of Murder

vybz kartel
Vybz Kartel, born Adidja Palmer, was moments ago found guilty of murdering his former associate Clive “Lizard” Williams.
The news sent shockwaves throughout the dancehall community as the entertainer is looking at spending the rest of his life behind bars.
The 11-member jury took just 2 hours in their deliberation before returning a 10:1 verdict. Presiding judge Lennox Campbell initially sent them back to deliberate further in hopes that they will reach a unanimous verdict.
But the jury returned inside the court minutes later with said 10:1 deadlock.
“We will not sit by and let this case of injustice score victory,” a rep for Vybz Kartel told Urbanislandz.com. “We will be appealing the verdict given the many questionable police corruption in the case.”
Vybz Kartel, Shawn “Storm” Campbell, Kahira Jones, André St John were all found guilty, while co-accused Shane Williams was acquitted of the murder
Jamaican authorities stunned everyone when they swoop down on a hotel in Kingston on September 30, 2011 and arrested Vybz Kartel and several other men.
Weeks later the aced dancehall star was slapped with not one but two murder charges. He was acquitted for the murder of Barrington “Bossie” Burton in July last year.
Vybz Kartel leaving court
After over two years and several delays, the trial for the murder of Clive Williams got underway on November 18, 2013 in the Home Circuit court in Kingston.
The prosecution, headed by attorney Jeremy Taylor, took 46 days and 24 witnesses to build its case against the “Dancehall Hero” deejay. The Crown argued that Vybz Kartel, his protege Shawn “Storm” Campbell, friends Kahira Jones, André St John, and Shane Williams all participated in the beating death Clive “Lizard” Williams over two missing firearms belonging to the deejay.
The alleged murder took place on August 16, 2011 at a house on Swallowfield Road in Havendale believed to be owned by Vybz Kartel.
Clive Williams body has yet to be found.
To help make their case, the prosecution introduced several damning evidences including text messages, voice notes, Blackberry Messenger messages and video footage.
The Crown also had the help of an informant who says he accompanied Clive Williams to the house in Havendale on the day of his disappearance. The star witness, Llamar Chow, says he escaped from the house after seeing his friend lifeless body on the floor.
He told the court that he saw one of the accused men with a building block in his hand.
The defense maintained that the entire case was fabricated by the police force with the help of the informant to secure a high profile conviction.
Senior police officer Patrick Linton admitted in court that one of the Blackberry smartphones that police officers extracted data from was being used while it was in the custody of his department at the cyber crime unit.
The defense asked the judge to exclude the phone and its data from the evidence but presiding judge Lennox Campbell rejected the motion and accepted the incriminating data into evidence.
Presiding judge Lennox Campbell took six days to give the 11-member jury his summation of the lengthy murder trial.
Justice Campbell told the jury to not find the dancehall artiste guilty based on the content of his lyrics. But focus solely on the evidence presented by the prosecution.
Vybz Kartel and his co-accused are facing life imprisonment for the murder.

Jonathan Commissions N8bn New Katsina Govt House

BirLm_SCUAABG3rPresident Goodluck Jonathan on Thursday inaugurated the N8 billion Katsina Government House with a promise to keep supporting the state government to deliver democracy dividends.
The inauguration ceremony was part of the activities lined up for the two-day official visit of the President to the state.
The President said that the completion of the edifice about a year to the end of Gov. Shehu Shema’s eight years’s administration was a demonstration of selfless service and committed leadership.
Jonathan, who said he was impressed with the quality of work, also commended Shema for leaving indelible blue print behind him.
He specifically hailed the governor’s efforts in the areas of educational and development of infrastrucuture in the state.
Earlier, Shema had said that the concept behind the project was that politics should be about service to humanity and not about self aggradisement or personal interest.
He said the concept was in line with the transformation agenda of the President.
Shema urged the President to continue with the positive programmes at the centre and should not be distracted by the challenges facing the nation.
“Mr. President, you have offered yourself to the service of this country and you are doing the best in human capacity development.
“In human endeavour, there must be some challenges so yours is not peculiar and Nigeria is facing its own challenges like the other nations of the world.
“There is no part of the world today that can claim that it is 100 per cent in peace and harmony”, he said.
Shema said that the N8 billion used in constructing the edifice was sourced neither from federal allocation nor internally generated revenue, but from interest accruing from bank savings of the state.
He said proceeds from the interest was also used in constructing the N400 million government house in Abuja.
Beside the edifice, Shema said his administration had constructed 200 secondary schools, 38 new primary schools while education from primary to secondary schools is free in the state.
He said his administration had also sent 600 students to study specialised courses like medicine, engineering, environmental sciences in universities abroad.
In the area of agriculture, Shema said the state had provided tractors, irrigation equipment, fertilizer and seedling to farmers.
The governor added that the state built 2000 houses which were sold to indigenes at 50 per cent discounted rate with 15 years instalmental payment.
NAN reports that the Government House complex included, Governor’s Office, Governor’s lodge, office complex for the governor’s wife and additional offices for principal staff of the governor.
The edifice also included, a presidential lodge and chalets for presidential aides, 200 capacity banquet hall and an indoor games and fitness centre. (NAN)

gabriel_suswamBenue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, on Thursday warned the people against playing politics with the lingering crisis between farmers and herdsmen in parts of the state, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.
Suswam said this at Ayilamo, Logo Local Government Area, while addressing displaced people in the area.

Police Commissioner Denies Boko Haram Attack On UNIMAID

unimaidThe Police Command in Borno on Friday denied reports of suspected Boko Haram insurgents attack on the University of Maiduguri (UNIMAID) campus.
The Commissioner of Police, Alhaji Lawal Tanko, made the denial in an interview in Maiduguri.
The story indicating that the university had been attack is not true.
“What happened was that the insurgents passed through a river channel behind the university to launch the attack on the barracks”, he said.
Tanko said that the university campus was safe as both students and lecturers had been adequately protected.
He, however, confirmed an attempted attack on the Giwa Barracks, Maiduguri, by suspected members of the sect.
“It is true that there is an ongoing exchange of fire between security agents and some suspected insurgents, but the incident is limited to the barracks area alone”, he said.
Also, Malam Ahmed Mohammed, the Chief Information Officer of the university, who spoke, corroborated the claim of the commissioner.
“The university camp was not attacked, the attackers only used a narrow river side near the campus to carry out their nefarious act.
“Many people assumed that the university was affected because the hostilities took place near the campus”, Mohammed said. (NAN)

Nigeria: Missing U.S.$20 Billion - Government Approves Forensic Audit of Corrupt NNPC

Photo: Leadership
Lamido Sanusi.
The Federal Government may soon commence the forensic audit of the accounts of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, as President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the engagement of reputable international firms to handle the exercise.
The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Reuben Abati, who stated this in Abuja on Wednesday, said this was to reassure Nigerians that government was actually determined to unravel the truth and get to the root of the controversy.
Mr. Abati said that contrary to claims by the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Lamido Sanusi that government was attempting to sweep the allegation of missing oil monies under the carpet, President Goodluck Jonathan was committed to ensuring that the relevant committees of the National Assembly investigated the issues to ensure that the culprits were brought to book.
Mr. Abati was reacting to alleged claims by Mr. Sanusi that his recent suspension from office was an attempt by the Presidency to bury his allegation that huge sums of money due to the Federation Account remained unaccounted for by the NNPC.
The Presidential spokesman noted that contrary to Mr. Sanusi's claim that his threat to force commercial banks to open up their books to unravel the whereabouts of the "missing" funds led to his suspension, the President had confirmed during the last Presidential media chat that the decision was to pave the way for a proper investigation of the allegations against him by the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria.
The Council in its report had accused Mr. Sanusi of "financial recklessness, gross misconduct and persistent disregard for laid down rules and regulations in the management of the Central Bank of Nigeria."
"The Presidency wishes to reaffirm that Mallam Sanusi's suspension has absolutely nothing to do with his unproven and inconsistent claim that $49.8 Billion, $12 Billion or $20 Billion is missing from the national treasury," Mr. Abati said.
The Presidential spokesperson criticized Mr. Sanusi for whipping up public sympathy for himself and inciting anger against the Federal Government by deliberately misleading unwary Nigerians and the international community into believing that he is being punished for exposing corruption.
He accused Mr. Sanusi of claiming that the government was involved in a scam to divert huge sums of money from the Federation Account through the misappropriation of kerosene subsidy funds, urging him to rather respond to allegations of official misconduct against him.
Declaring that the allegations were "patently untrue", Mr. Abati accused the CBN governor of inciting Nigerians over his claims that the alleged missing oil monies may have been diverted by government to fund campaigns for next year's general elections.
Condemning Mr. Sanusi for allegedly resorting to "playing politics with serious national issues", Mr. Abati said such claims amounted to cheap blackmail against the government and was clearly made in furtherance of a selfish personal agenda, "most unbecoming of someone who still holds the High Office of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria."
Such claims, he pointed out, were not only mischievous and irresponsible, but also a design to incite other political parties and members of the public against the Federal Government.
The CBN governor had accused the NNPC of failing to account for about $49.8 billion oil revenues, after which the Senate Committee on Finance called for a forensic audit to establish the truth.
The Minister of Finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, had also amplified the need for a forensic audit of the Corporation's account to unravel the discrepancies.
Efforts to reconcile the figures between the CBN and the NNPC only ended with a range of more unreconciled figures, from $10.8 billion, $12billion to $20 billion.
However, the delay in appointing the auditing firm to handle the assignment, coupled with President Jonathan's decision to send the CBN governor on suspension, had fuelled speculation that the Presidency was keen on suppressing issues about the missing oil monies.

How IBB, David Mark Intervened To Stop Gusau From Resigning

Moments after online news portal, Saharareporter broke the news on the resignation of the minister of defence, Lt.-Gen Aliyu Gusau, the Presidency and the Ministry of Defence denied the report stating that Gusau still remains the minister in charge of defence.

But the denial notwithstanding, The Punch in a report said it gathered that minister was on his way out of the cabinet of President Goodluck Jonathan but for the pressure mounted on him at the instance of President Jonathan.
Sahara Reporters had reported that Gusau threatened to leave office instead of being ridiculed by Badeh and others.
According to the report, the minister, in company with the Minister of State for Defence, Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro, were said to have been “talked down by the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh, at a meeting between him and the service chiefs, a development that led to his decision to resign.
But the report by Punch said Jonathan had to quickly call for the intervention of the Senate President,   David Mark, and a former dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida to make the minister have a rethink.
Punch report said
It was gathered that the intervention of the two men was    at the instance of  President Goodluck Jonathan. The President was said to have asked the two men to appeal to Gusau  not  to leave  his government.
It  was further learnt  that Jonathan , who   considered  the move by the minister  to leave office as ridiculous,  also  asked  him (Gusau) to reconsider his position.
Apart from this, the President   reasoned that  his resignation    could  affect the image of the Federal Government negatively.
Our  source said, “This was the reason the President asked  Mark and Babangida to intervene by speaking with Gusau, which they did.
“The two of them spoke with Gusau and he agreed to stay back. The issues he raised that  made him want   to leave office are  being resolved. I know that sooner than later, heads would roll in the military.”
The source   confirmed that Gusau, who probably had an antidote to curb the bloodshed in the North-East, had summoned a meeting  with the  security chiefs  on how to change  military  strategies  in the zone.
“I can tell you that the military and everybody were surprised that Gusau  wanted  to leave the job. Although his threat of  resignation would be denied by the Ministry of Defence, I can tell you that they won’t tell you the details of what transpired,” the source added.

‘Nigeria Must Vacate Biafra By March 31 Or There Will Be More Blood Bath’ – Biafra Zionist Federation

Biafra

A pan-Biafra organisation, the Biafra Zionist Federation (BZF), formerly Biafra Zionist Movement (BZM), led by British trained lawyer Benjamin Onwuka, has claimed responsibility for the attack on the Enugu Government House.

The group also gave warning to Nigeria to vacate Biafra of face more blood bath.
The group said its motive was to hoist the Biafra flag and “reconfirm the independence of the Republic of Biafra.”
Over 500 members of the Biafra Zionist Federation were arrested and detained by the police on November 5, 2012, at Enugu, after it re-declared the Republic of Biafra.
Members said Nigeria “must vacate Biafra by March 31 and failure to do so will result in a blood bath.”
Onwuka, who led the Enugu invasion, told reporters in Enugu that “since January 12, 1970, the Biafra flag has never rested in Government House, Enugu, which is the Biafra’s centre of power.”
He said they were unarmed, saying they only brought flags, sticks and ropes to hoist the flags, which also included that of Israel. “We don’t know how the police came up with the story of machetes, cutlasses and charms.”
Onwuka said: “What we did on March 8 was to re-confirm the independence of the Republic of Biafra, which we successfully did. We didn’t attack the Government House. But we captured it for the Biafra people. We battled for four hours from 3 a.m. By 7 a.m., we retreated because we didn’t have any weapons, to avoid loss of life.
“And the reason why we did it was to show the Biafra people that the hope of Biafra is still alive. And nothing shall quench the aspirations of the people to be independent. And that independence has resurrected. So the Biafra flag was raised at the Government House on March 8. And I, Benjamin Igwe Onwuka led the operation.”
The group warned the police to free four of their members. “Those boys must be freed now because what Nigeria is going to face soon would not be forgotten easily.
It called for the unity of pan-Biafra organisations, such as MASSOB, MEND, Bakassi Peninsular Boys, Zionism and others.
The BZF, which drew a new map of Biafra, including Benue, Kogi, Delta, Edo, Bayelsa, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Ebonyi, Anambra, Enugu, Imo, Abia and southern Ondo, said there was no division among these groups.

Missing $20 Billion: Okonjo-Iweala Launches Expensive International Media Campaign To Save Her Damaged Reputation

Africa-Ngozi-Okonjo-Iweala-2

By Sahara Reporters
Unsettled by questions swirling around the world about Nigeria’s missing crude oil earnings as well as the overall management of the Nigerian economy, Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has launched a major public relations campaign to save her reputation from ruin. Several sources disclosed that the minister wants to insure her political survival while sending signals to the international financial community that she is angry with those behind the scandal in the oil sector, specifically Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke.
In the last three months, Nigeria has been the focus of international attention. Reporters, financial analysts and investors have raised concerns about the unresolved controversy over the billions of dollars of crude oil sales that the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) reportedly did not remit with the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Suspended Central Bank Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi sent shock waves in the financial world when he told a panel of the National Assembly that the NNPC had yet to account for $20 billion of the country’s crude oil sales. As part of the missing funds, Mr. Sanusi, who was suspended from office two weeks ago, stated that more than $6 billion that should have accrued to Nigeria from a so-called strategic partnership agreement with private oil companies had apparently been siphoned into unknown private accounts.
While Petroleum Minister Diezani Alison-Madueke is the immediate focus of the missing funds as well as massive corruption in the oil sector, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala’s reputation as a solid economic manager has also taken a major hit. As a well known former top official of the World Bank, her failure to detect the anomalies in the massive scandal in the oil sector has been questioned. One source said many foreign admirers of Ms. Okonjo-Iweala’s image as an informed economic manager were wondering whether she was kept in the dark about the apparent theft of Nigeria’s oil funds or she had decided to stay silent about the issue for the sake of her political survival.
Such questions have rattled Ms. Okonjo-Iweala. She has recently relied heavily on the services of Mercury LLC, an image management firm that was hired by the Goodluck Jonathan government to manage the administration’s image. Our investigations revealed that the Jonathan administration paid the firm an initial fee of $150,000 after retaining the company in August 2013. The firm retains the right to charge the Nigerian government extra cost for assignments of this nature.
Ms. Okonjo –Iweala has used the foreign lobby and image management firm, which is a big player in Washington, DC and other places, in a big campaign to repair her own dented image as well as help fix the Jonathan administration’s image crisis.
The firm describes itself as “a high-stakes public strategy firm” whose “expertise comes from extensive must-win campaign experience.” The firm also boasts that “We know what it takes to win in difficult situations. We have proven results for prominent figures, leading advocacy groups and the world’s most successful companies.”
Ms. Okonjo-Iweala has privately complained that President Jonathan and Ms. Alison-Madueke have created unnecessary problems for her, causing her image to take a beating. But one of her critics asserts that the minister’s extensive use of the services of Mercury LLC suggests that she is in tune with the administration’s policies.
In the wake of Mr. Sanusi’s first allegation that Nigeria had lost close to $50 billion, the Finance Minister quickly initiated a tripartite meeting involving officials of the CBN and the Petroleum Ministry in order to “reconcile” discrepancies in crude oil revenue deposits. At the end of the first stage of the reconciliation process, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala announced that only $10.8 billion remained unaccounted for, even though Mr. Sanusi insisted that the figure was more than $12 billion. Some analysts have wondered why the Finance Minister has not been more forthcoming in explaining what happened to the $10.8 billion she admitted was yet to be reconciled.
A source close to Ms. Okonjo-Iweala told SaharaReporters that the minister felt she had been placed “in a difficult situation to explain missing money that she knows nothing about.” The source stated that the Finance Minister has complained to her close confidants that she was upset for being questioned over funds that Ms. Alison-Madueke, as Petroleum Minister, should be answering questions about. “If you look at it, Dr. Okonjo-Iweala has nothing to do with the missing money,” said the source. “Yet, the foreign media continues to direct their questions and criticism at her as if they mistake her for the Petroleum Minister. She thinks it is unfair.”
Another source said the image firm may have advised Ms. Okonjo-Iweala to take an aggressive line with the foreign media in addition to washing her hands clean of the scandal by backing an audit of the oil transactions. In February, the minister indicated her support for the audit option. Earlier today, President Jonathan stated that his government was open to the idea, but did not go as far as stating that his administration was in the process of engaging a reputable auditor.
One source said the Finance Minister realizes how that increasing international criticism, especially those questioning her management of Nigeria’s economy, have damaged the way she is perceived around the world. President Goodluck Jonathan’s decision to suspend Mr. Sanusi from the post of CBN Governor was an additional public relations nightmare for Ms. Okonjo-Iweala, said the source. “Again, she feels as if she was being blamed for the firing of Sanusi, even though she was not behind it. And there was nothing she could have done about it,” said the source.
In order to counteract the growing attacks in the foreign media, Ms. Okonjo-Iweala decided to come out of the shell and confront her critics. In a BBC interview with Will Ross yesterday, the minister came across as frustrated. Facing a barrage of tough questions from the reporter, the minister seemed to lose her cool as she implied that Mr. Sanusi was irresponsible in going public with the missing billions. She also claimed that her ministry was carrying out due diligence and had informed local governments as well as state governments in the past about shortfalls in the NNPC’s lodgments of crude oil revenues. A source said her harsh tone in the interview reflected her frustration that many foreign analysts were portraying her as inept in handling the issue of the missing billions. (The link to the interview is here: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-26535530).
The minister also wrote an editorial opinion piece that will run in tomorrow’s edition of the Financial Times (FT). In the piece, titled “Recent setbacks will not undo Nigeria’s progress,” Ms. Okonjo-Iweala tried to play down the damage that arose from the scandal of the missing billions and the firing of Mr. Sanusi. She claimed that the fundamentals of the Nigerian economy remain solid. “Allegations of unremitted oil revenues, and leadership changes at the central bank, have attracted a great deal of the wrong kind of attention to Nigeria,” the minister wrote, adding, “Though there was consternation in the markets following the suspension of Lamido Sanusi, governor of the country’s central bank, a sense of normality is gradually returning.”  The paper’s online edition can be read here.
A source said the piece was part of the minister’s effort to douse the political heat that she and the Jonathan administration have faced. Even though the piece emphasizes the need for a “forensic” audit of the NNPC and oil revenues, her stronger contention that Nigeria’s economic future lies outside of the oil and gas sectors may be seen as a clever way of downplaying the necessity for a credible audit. The Jonathan administration is notoriously slow on issues of transparency.
A source in Abuja said the piece revealed Ms. Okonjo-Iweala trying to do a balancing act. On the one hand, she created the impression that the Nigerian economy has recovered fully from any instability caused by the outcry over the missing funds scandal and, on the other, she tried to make herself look focused on piloting Nigeria to greater economic heights.
In the last week, both the New York Times and the Financial Times have written reports or editorials critical of the financial goings-on in Nigeria, including how the suspension of Mr. Sanusi had shaken investor confidence in Nigeria.
The troubles for the administration as well as Ms. Okonjo-Iweala may be far from over. A source told SaharaReporters that suspended CBN Governor Sanusi earlier today submitted an “explosive” letter to President Jonathan. A source stated that Mr. Sanusi’s letter, which we could not obtain as at press time, was a response to recent government attacks on his credibility and service at the Central Bank.

Gov. Obi Debunks SGF, Ministerial Appointment Rumours

peter-obi-360x22588898770Governor Peter Obi of Anambra State has described as a figment of imagination, some media reports that he was being considered for either the post of Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, a minister or an ambassador.
Obi’s eight year tenure as governor comes to an end next Monday when he hands over power to the governor-elect, Chief Willie Obiano.
A statement in Awka, the state capital yesterday by Obi’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Mr. Valentine Obienyem, said the epidemic of speculations surrounding the governor’s next move was understandable, but insisted, however, that his boss’ only wish was to hand over successfully, having taken the Southeast state from grass to glory and from a state that was synonymous with bank robberies to one that had not witnessed any bank robbery in four years.
Obieyem said: “As you are aware, Obi is still the governor of Anambra State.  His major concern is to finish strong.
“Associating any federal appointment with him is speculation and rumour-mongering and should be treated as such”.
According to him, whatever would “happen to the governor after his exit from Awka Government House is God’s wish”.
The media aide said what should be the people’s concern was how the governor would end successfully and support the in-coming administration for the good of the state and not planting seeds of discord through baseless rumours.

Why are the missing Malaysian Airlines passengers' phones still ringing? Relatives' agony as search zone now switches to entirely new area and Iranian man on missing passport traced and 'isn't terrorist'

The 'unprecedented mystery' behind the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines flight MH 370 deepened on Monday when relatives claimed they were able to call the cellphones of their missing loved ones.
According to the Washington Post, family of some of the 239 people on board the vanished Boeing 777 said that they were getting ring tones and could see them active online through a Chinese social networking service called QQ.
One man said that the QQ account of his brother-in-law showed him as online, but frustratingly for those waiting desperately for any news, messages sent have gone unanswered and the calls have not been picked up.
This new eerie development comes as the Malaysian authorities said they had identified one of the men on two stolen European passports who were on the flight - and that he was not considered likely to be a terrorist
He was a 19-year-old Iranian asylum seeker called Pouiria Nur Mohammad Mehrdad who was trying to meet his mother in Germany.

Separately, the search for any trace of the missing airliner has now shifted to the Straits of Malacca, at least 100 miles away from where it was last recorded by electronic monitoring devices.
The dramatic shift raises the possibility that it flew undetected, crossing mainland Malaysia, before ditching into the sea.
However the phantom phone calls and online presence set off a whole new level of hysteria for relatives who have spent the past three-days cooped-up in a Beijing hotel waiting for some concrete information on the missing plane.
Repeatedly telling Malaysian Airlines officials about the QQ accounts and ringing telephone calls, they hoped that modern technology could simply triangulate the GPS signal of the phones and locate their relatives.
However, according to Singapore's Strait Times, a Malaysia Airlines official, Hugh Dunleavy has confirmed to families that his company had tried to call the cellphones of crew members and they too had also rang out.

He is reported to have told relatives that those phone numbers have been turned over to Chinese authorities.
One man who had asked police to come to his house and see the active QQ account on his computer was devastated to see that by Monday afternoon it had switched to inactive.
According to China.org.cn, 19 families of those missing have signed a joint statement confirming that their calls connected to their loved ones but that they rang out.
The relatives have asked for a full investigation and some complained that Malaysian Airlines is not telling the whole truth.

The International Business Times reported that the sister of one of the Chinese passengers also rang his phone on live television.
'This morning, around 11:40, I called my older brother's number twice, and I got the ringing tone,' said Bian Liangwei, sister of one of the passengers according to IBT.
At 2pm, Bian called again and heard it ringing once more.
'If I could get through, the police could locate the position, and there's a chance he could still be alive.'
However, at a press conference in Beijing, Malaysian Airlines spokesman Ignatius Ong said one of the numbers that had been passed on to the airline's head office in Kuala Lumpur failed to get through.
'I myself have called the number five times while the airline's command center also called the number. We got no answering tone,' said Ong.
Indeed, authorities Authorities hunting for the missing Malaysia Airlines jetliner expanded their search on land and sea Tuesday, reflecting the difficulties in locating traces of the plane more than three days after it vanished.
Malaysia Airlines said in a statement the western coast of the country, near the Straits of Malacca, was 'now the focus' of the hunt. That is on the other side of peninsular Malaysia from where flight 370 was reported missing.

Vietnamese officers discuss their plan during a meeting before a mission to find the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 at Phu Quoc Airport on Phu Quoc Island March 11, 2014
Civil aviation chief Azharuddin Abdul Rahman said the statement didn't imply authorities believed the plane was off the western coast. 'The search is on both sides,' he said.
The Boeing 777 had 239 people on board when it vanished off radar screens early Saturday morning en route to Beijing from Kuala Lumpur, triggering a massive international search effort.
Authorities began their hunt at the point the plane was last known to be, a spot in the seas between Malaysia and Vietnam. With no debris found, they have systematically expanded their search to include areas where the plane could have in theory ended up given the amount of fuel it had on board.
They have also said that the plane might have tried to turn back to Kuala Lumpur. On Sunday, Malaysia's air force chief said there were indications on military radar that the jet may have done a U-turn.
Vietnamese planes and ships are a major component of the international search and rescue effort.

Lt. Gen. Vo Van Tuan, deputy chief of staff of Vietnamese People's Army, said authorities on land had also been ordered to search for the plane, which could have crashed into mountains or uninhabited jungle.
He said that military units near the border with Laos and Cambodia had been instructed to search their regions also.
'So far we have found no signs (of the plane) ... so we must widen our search on land,' he said.
Experts say possible causes of the apparent crash include an explosion, catastrophic engine failure, extreme turbulence, pilot error or even suicide.
This deepening of the already baffling mystery into the disappearance of flight MH370 comes as it was claimed that the two passengers traveling on stolen passports on the plane were Iranian nationals.
A friend of one of the two men told BBC Persia that he played host to the pair in Kuala Lumpur after their arrival from Tehran before they took off on the fateful journey.

The source told the BBC service that the pair had bought the fake passports because they wanted to go and live in Europe.
The two men were using the passports of Christian Kozel - a 30-year-old Austrian and Luigi Maraldi, a 37-year-old Italian.
The friend, who knew one of the men from school said that both purchased the illegal and fake passports in Malaysia and one-way tickets to Amsterdam.
BBC Persia's UN correspondent Bahman Kalbasi told the UK's Daily Telegraph newspaper that the two men were not sinister and were only 'looking for a place to settle.'
Investigators in Malaysia are voicing skepticism that the airliner that disappeared early Saturday with 239 people on board was the target of an attack, U.S. and European government sources close to the probe said.

The fate of the Malaysian airliner that vanished about an hour into a flight to Beijing remained a mystery, as a massive air and sea search, now in its third day, failed to turn up any trace of the Boeing 777 plane.
Neither Malaysia's Special Branch, the agency leading the investigation locally, nor spy agencies in the United States and Europe have ruled out the possibility that militants may have been involved in downing Malaysia Airlines Flight.
But Malaysian authorities have indicated that the evidence so far does not strongly back an attack as a cause for the aircraft's disappearance, and that mechanical or pilot problems could have led to the apparent crash, the U.S. sources said.
'There is no evidence to suggest an act of terror,' said a European security source, who added that there was also 'no explanation what's happened to it or where it is.'

Meanwhile, dozens of ships and aircraft from 10 countries were still scouring the seas around Malaysia and south of Vietnam as questions mounted over possible security lapses that could have led to a downing of the Boeing 777-200ER after it climbed to an altitude of 35,000 feet.
Interpol confirmed on Sunday at least two passengers used stolen passports and said it was checking whether others aboard had used false identity documents.
Even so, one U.S. source said Malaysian authorities were leaning away from the theory that the plane was attacked.
Their view was mostly based on electronic evidence that indicates the flight may have turned back toward the Malaysian capital of Kuala Lumpur before disappearing.
Even that information has not been clearly confirmed, and investigators and intelligence sources say the fate of the Flight MH370 is still shrouded in mystery.

One reason was that the aircraft had failed to make automatic contact with a flight data-monitoring system after vanishing from radar screens, two people familiar with the matter said on Monday.
Such contact could have helped investigators determine what happened.
Also raising doubts about the possibility of an attack, the United States extensively reviewed imagery taken by spy satellites for evidence of a mid-air explosion, but saw none, a US government source said. The source described U.S. satellite coverage of the region as thorough.
With no success so far, authorities were planning to widen the search from Tuesday, Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, the head of Malaysia's Civil Aviation Authority, told reporters on Monday.
'Unfortunately we have not found anything that appears to be objects from the aircraft, let alone the aircraft,' he said.
'As far as we are concerned, we have to find the aircraft. We have to find a piece of the aircraft if possible.'
Azharuddin said a hijacking attempt could not be ruled out as investigators explore all theories.
